Steam Deck: Hands-On With Valve’s Handheld Gaming PC

The Valve Steam Deck is running a new version of SteamOS based on Arch Linux, using Proton, a compatibility layer that should make it possible to play your games without any compatibility issues. It has an AMD CPU and comes in 64GB, 256GB and 512GB versions, but can take an external SD card too.

It can run fully hand-held, or have a mouse, keyboard and external monitor plugged in to operate like a desktop PC.

I'm running Proton GE on my Manjaro Linux computer and all the Windows games I have in Steam, are running just fine. I've just always found it difficult to migrate away from using a mouse, and still prefer the mouse over even the Steam Controller.

The Steam Deck is expected to start shipping in December 2021.

Apple Supplier Rockley Photonics Unveils Health Tracking Tech Likely to Come to Apple Watch including Core Body Temp, Blood Pressure, Body Hydration, Alcohol, Lactate, and Glucose Trends

Many wearables use green LEDs to monitor heart rate, but Rockley's sensor uses infrared spectrophotometers that can detect and monitor a much wider range of biomarkers to dramatically increase the functionality of wearable devices. The sensor generates lasers to non-invasively probe beneath the skin to analyze blood, interstitial fluids, and layers of the dermis for specific constituents and physical phenomena.

digiKam 7.3 Cross-Platform Open-Source Photo Management App Released with ExifTool Support, Export to iNaturalist, Improved Find Duplicates, Etc

digiKam is my favourite tool for photo management, metadata updates, geolocation setting/stripping, editing, batch updates, and exporting directly to Piwigo (which I use for my photo sharing service) and to other popular photo sharing services.

Version 7.3 follows only about four months after 7.2, so they are constantly working on updates and the application is also further expanded through 3rd party plugin functionality.

It installs on Linux (of course), Windows and macOS, as well as having a "no need to install" AppImage for Linux.

Get to know XML, a strict yet flexible markup language used for everything from documentation to graphics, and the basis of most government open standard formats

XML is a hierarchical markup language. It uses opening and closing tags to define data. It's used to store and exchange data, and because of its extreme flexibility, it's used for everything from documentation to graphics (or for interchanging data between different systems or applications).

Reading the sample XML, you might find there's an intuitive quality to the format. You can probably understand the data in this document whether you're familiar with the subject matter or not. XML is also extremely flexible. Unlike HTML, there's no predefined list of tags. You are free to create whatever data structure you need to represent.

Samsung’s TV Plus is now streaming on the web for free, but has geoblocking limited to the U.S.

So you no longer need an actual Samsung mobile device or TV but I noticed it only worked in my country with a VPN. There is some good content, but it is a throwback to the pre-streaming on demand days, with channel scheduling and TV ads.

It gives viewers in the U.S. access to around 140 streaming channels, with its lineup including channels like ABC News Live, PBS Kids, ION Plus, Vice and a number of genre-specific Vevo channels. These channels can be accessed by anyone, regardless of whether they own a Samsung device or not, but some channels do require users to sign in with a free Samsung account.

How interoperability could end Facebook’s death grip on social media after all ActivityPub and other open standards already exist for social media

Different channels showing different background ads from the same live TV.
This is interesting advertisement technology, the ability to target the ads on live feed to specific audiences. On TV channels this can mean by country or region, on Internet it can be narrowed down even more, age, sex, economic status and so on, depending on what prior information broadcasters/advertisers have managed to get from their customers.

With that in mind we are faced with a weird situation where two/many people can watch the same live footage yet not see the same thing.
At first this technique will mostly be used for advertisement billboards or something similar to promote ads. I can foresee issues in the future when the use of...say...green-screens on live feeds get used in this manner.
