Hello!

I'm Scotty. I am a policy student, a writer, and a cooperative enthusiast interested in seeing how a social media site runs when its operated by its users. Its nice to meet all of you! My interests are in the hashtags.

#introduction #policy #jazz #fencing #chicago #cooperatives #socialism #philosophy #art #science #literature #rock #urbanplanning #theatre #theater

OK my #introduction / #introductions: I'm into

#science related stuff, including:
- #astronomy (which I do professionally)
- #python
- #datavisualization
- #galaxies

Programming, writing and note taking tools like:
- #Vim / #Neovim
- #Emacs (yes, I use both!)
- #orgmode
- #orgroam

And #Music, including
- #classicalmusic
- #folkmusic
- #metal
- #punk

...And a bunch of more stuff, but that seems to be the most important things. I am also obnoxiously opinionated.

#introductions

Hi everyone! Just migrated my old account @sirduck@mastodon.social here, to post more specifically about #privacy #foss #security #tech and issues around the world in general. I'm a student and love learning more about tech, #linux and anything really, I have plenty more interests like #space #science #photography #games #movies #nature and of course I enjoy any and all memes

As you can see I suck at introductions but I'm happy to be here 馃榾

For more cozy content you can follow me on @spacelizard

#introduction

I am a #maths educator #teaching near #Paris, in #France.

Science-wise, I am interested in maths and #computer #science, particularly in some fields at the intersection of these two: algorithmic number theory, computer #algebra, #cryptography, coding theory... And I love to teach!

I also like #politics, #games of all types, #improv (theatre), #reading. I toot in French when I think that mostly French people could be interested.

And I might talk about #parenting since I'm a dad!

Have been using Mastodon daily for a week and now I think is time for a proper #introduction.
Hi everyone! My name is Juan and I am a Physics engineer turned Computer/Software engineer. I love computers, programming, gaming, art and indie stuff. Because of my background, #science and #math are core interests of mine. In the computer realm, I daily enjoy my #Arch #linux setup using #PopOS tiling and search features, with #Neovim as my IDE of choice.

Moving to social.coop so posting a new #introduction I'm a bit fuzzy on the moving process and what I need to do. This will do for the moment I suppose!

So, a quick list of interests with tags:

#permaculture
#socialecology
#solarpunk
#cycling
#astronomy
#science
#skepticism
#climatecrisis
#anarchism

'Sci-fiction' has a flaw in naming it as 'fiction' because the one or the other day everything is possible with advancement in science and technology.

#reintroductions #reintroduction Hi, I'm Marco from Hamburg, Germany. I was born in 1973, so have been wandering this Earth for a while. My interests include #music, #ScienceFiction in both novel and TV show form, mostly #StarTrek, but open to anything new and exciting. I'm also interested in #technology, #science, #queer topics, #humanism. I work on and for the open #web, #accessibility and #usability. And I tinker and test stuff. Apps, web sites, etc.

As a federalist European, I want to address the European people to get further.
Dont get stuck on the
"Back then everything was better" mentality of today which is "We have other problems."
Break out of the cycle of the past generations, don't make the same mistake.Go further, because that's what Europe needs. 馃嚜馃嚭 馃殌 馃憤馃従

That鈥檚 right, it鈥檚 #SpaceTalkTuesday time! This week it鈥檚 all about ~exoplanetary habitability~

What does habitability really mean? Do we know of any habitable #exoplanets? How will we be able to study them now and in the future?

Follow along for answers to these #science questions and more!

(fair warning, this will be a long thread. the threaded posts are unlisted as a best practice, but you can still boost them)

For me it all started with my love for #science, then took giant leaps because of my love for my children and finally ended with God's love for His children.

As a child, in school, I was soaking up my earth science textbook when I read something confusing. While reading about the geologic column it said the layers are dated by the #fossils they contain. I turn the page and it plainly explained that the fossils are dated by @masterofthetiger - 1/13

I think I need to point out that I am neither a #science or a #physicist

It's an old joke, which I don't even remember the details for anymore and I'm too lazy to move my account again

New server, new #introduction.

I'm Hugh. I live in south-west #England with my partner and children. I work as a web developer, and contribute to #Rustodon.

I make #music occasionally. I've played bass in bands, but mostly I compose weird music solo on a computer. I contributed a track to the second A Whale's Lantern compilation by musicians of Mastodon, collaborating with Mascha.

I speak some #deutsch, and less #francais.

Time for an #introduction in 500 characters. I'm Timo, a Dutch bisexual cis guy who's currently struggling to finish his PhD. I value diversity, equality and fairness in science and society. I have worked in #Microbiology (#Anaerobes #Spores #Yeast) & #FoodScience (#Beer #Wine). My interests involve #Science #funfacts #podcasts #videogames #cycling #dancing #DnD #architecture (mostly just tooting photos of buildings though). I hope to expand my #scicomm once I have a job again. Cheers! :toot:

Just released version 0.4 of mpl-chord-diagrams with support for directed chords 馃帀

https://codeberg.org/tfardet/mpl_chord_diagram

https://zenodo.org/record/6583471

If you're looking for a simple library in #Python to make #chordDiagrams with #matplotlib, then this is for you!

You can simply install it via pip.

#science #dataViz #plotting
Directed chord diagram using the "summer" (yellow-green) colormap.
Chords are sorted by distance.
Undirected chord diagram with a gap between arcs and chords.
It uses gradients to show the link between the two extremities of each chord.
Colormap is viridis.

How does #groundwater dissolved organic matter (DOM) change over time?

As part of the AquaDiva project at @unijena we are investigating the #metabolomics (DOM) in an aquifer monitoring system in Germany.

Our multi-year dataset now allows to query DOM changes in response to water flows.

This short-video (2 min) gives an insight 鈥 comments & contact welcome!

Sneaky. How to make people think with an absurd Null Hypothesis, such as "Humans do not contribute to Climate Change.":

The Thinker by Rodin.

Sneaky. How to make people think with an absurd Null Hypothesis, such as "Humans do not contribute to Climate Change."

How to convince people? With a Null Hypothesis!

As scientists, we often face the problem that people don't believe us. Even more, new ideas, such as a vaccine protecting from a deadly virus, generate strong resistance.

Thus: Build a Null Hypothesis of the opposite fact and let people contradict it.

E.g., "Humans do not contribute to Climate Change."

I will send out some Null Hypotheses. Please prove they are "false" 馃槈.

Really cool; in 2019 researchers mathematically proved "Magic: The Gathering" is the first known real-world game to be non-computable: there is no optimal strategy for it and there never will be no matter how much power is devoted to "solving" the game.

Because it launched folded up, # spent the first several weeks verrryyy carefully unfolding itself in space as it traveled to its orbit.

The scariest part was the sunshield tensioning! The sunshield is the pink/grey part and is used to keep the mirrors and instruments nice and cold so we can see the very faint heat from the early universe!

Do people like threads here? I guess we'll find out!

Between meetings today I thought I'd talk about # # and all the exciting # we can expect from it starting in a few months!
