The Cramps - “Songs The Lord Taught Us” LP
I remember seeing this album cover and expecting something dark and weird, like the band “Christian Death”. But from the opening track, it’s clear this is a guitar-centric mix of some of my favorite genres: rockabilly, punk, surf and garage. It’s a campy yet sinister interpretation of twangy Americana.
Lead singer Lux Interior was a wild, flamboyantly transgressive character with amazing stage presence. Even at a young age, I really appreciated the gender bending showmanship. It seemed extremely “punk rock”.
I saw The Cramps once on Halloween and it was one of the best shows I’ve ever experienced.
