We finally made it! This is the result of a group of 15 amateur astronomers (which I am part of) who have shared their data in an effort to get as much data on this pair of galaxies as possible. The result is over 400h of exposure time (where over 200 are in narrow band Hydrogen-Alpha).

This allowed us to create the deepest and most detailed image of M81 and M82 probably done by amateur astronomers ever! The red, faint Hydrogen "exploding" outwards from Messier 82 is truly a sight to be seen.

Aurora 20230423

One of the biggest and best aurora displays I've seen.

Sunset turned to twilight and the clouds dispersed on cue right as the display exploded, more than filling the field of view even at 8mm (12mm-e) on my ultrawide lens - pillars and rays stretching up past Polaris even to the zenith.

Mesmerising just to stand in front of it.

New Zealand has some incredible beaches and most times you can have the whole thing to yourself.

This is NapeNape on the Canterbury coast, not on the tourist map at all, has some interesting fossils, some cool rock pools etc and great black sand makes an interesting spot to shoot

A picture taken from a camera laying on an airport moving sidewalk. The long exposure makes the surrounding lights and walls blur, while the rubber ridges in the moving walkway itself move with the camera and remain in sharp focus. The sightlines all converge to a distant point in the center distance.

This photo of the Waitangi Waterfall is from the Omeru Reserve, north of #Auckland.

For this composition I've emphasised the framing effect of the native trees and ferns. Waterfalls are common in many NZ forests, which means the scenes have a lot of green hues in them.

It took an hour's journey in an off road super jeep in deep snow and over rough terrain to get down to these falls and then a significant hike down a very steep incline carrying heavy camera gear and tripod in knee and thigh deep snow... quite a feat while snowing heavily and battling very strong winds...
Standing at twenty metres tall, it plummets into a beautiful blue lagoon. Only 100-150 people get to see these falls annually in winter as it's off the tourist trail, so it was quite a privilege to photograph them and we had the place to ourselves... it was a magnificent sight to see...

Am Abend waren wir am Hopfensee auf Motivsuche. Nachdem die Sonne hinter den Bergen verschwunden war, experimentierte ich gerade noch mit längerem Belichtungszeiten auf dem Steg, als rechts von mir der Himmel explodierte. Also schnell das Stativ umgestellt und draufgehalten 😆 Mit der Komposition bin ich nicht so ganz zufrieden, aber die Farben waren der Wahnsinn!
