Había fallecido tras pasear a su perro hacía poco más de una semana. No parecía lo destinado para un héroe del punk, pero lo cierto es que #JoeStrummer se había ido. Su última actuación, fue a beneficio de unos bomberos en huelga donde había estado junto a Mick Jones con quien no compartía escenario desde el 83. Tal vez por eso, su recorrido final, el 30 de diciembre del 2002, hacia el West London Crematorium fue precedido por una autobomba. El cortejo pasó frente a lo que supo ser el pub Elgin, en Ladbroke Grove, donde los Clash iniciaron su exitoso e influyente itinerario musical.
