IT COMES AT NIGHT has amazing A24 cinematography and a creepy score. The technical aspects far exceeded the acting or plot. The ending did have some decent tension.

Black Snake Moan (2006 US) Christina Ricci and Samuel L Jackson star in this really NSFW drama about a female nymphomaniac (Ricci) reliving severe sexual trauma as a child and a blues man (Jackson) trying to cure her affliction by chaining her up. As promised at the beginning of #LoveFestFebruary I would feature films that are not just your garden variety rom coms. So here it is. It was uncomfortable to watch for sure but it had some very deep moments especially with regard to mental illness. I do think the point was to make you feel uncomfortable. Talking about child sexual abuse and the aftermath is very uncomfortable. Jackson in his sort of elder sage role does his best to help Ricci and not get drawn in by her advances. I love how Jackson and Ricci just were not afraid to go there. I can imagine other actors when presented with the script were like..Nope! 1957: Night of the Demon

We have two towering examples of American filmmaking here in 12 Angry Men and A Face in the Crowd.

Top honors go to this British horror film that would inspire another pick of mine, 2009's Drag Me to Hell. Jacques Tourneur's film is not only distinctly different from Sam Raimi's update, but it's also far superior.

Niall MacGinnis is magnetic as Julian Karswell, a Satanic cult leader who uses Celtic runes to curse his adversaries. Dana Andrews is a professor who's determined to investigate Karswell, only to end up bringing a curse upon himself.

An aura of dread and tension practically DRIPS off this film, and with MacGinnis as the charismatic predator and Andrews as the initially skeptical prey, we have a top-notch conflict that drives the plot. Love the writing and direction, love love love the ominous feel of the whole work. But it's the performances that give Demon its teeth.

#Watching DAY OF THE DEAD

Love the gore and the kills. The acting is laughably bad, yet adds to its charm.
The actors SCREAM ALL THEIR LINES and with such heavy handed dialogue it comes off funnier than it should be.
A Romero #movie I'd probably rate higher on a rewatch and put the volume lower.
My 3rd favorite Romero and my favorite Mexican holiday.
