Encryption is either secure or it’s not – there is no middle ground


The principle of end-to-end encryption underpins a system of communication where only the communicating users can read the messages. To this end, it exists to prevent any potential eavesdroppers (telecom providers, internet providers, law enforcement agencies) from being able to access the cryptographic keys needed to decrypt the conversation.

By calling on technology companies to find ways to bypass encryption so that law enforcement agencies can quickly access a suspect’s messages or device, we may end up with weak encryption. And weak encryption is the same as no encryption.

I have seen some conversations about the security of pods and the like. I'd like to point my pod members and others who might be having the same questions to this excellent thread concerning where diaspora* sits in the security landscape:
