Happy birthday to trailblazing American computer scientist Frances Elizabeth Allen (1932 – 2020) who made foundational contributions to optimizing compilers, optimizing programs and parallel computing. She was the first woman to become an IBM Fellow, where she worked from 1957 to 2002 and as an emeritus fellow afterwards. She was the first woman to win the Turing Prize.

My linocut in blue of Fran Allen (woman with short hair, glasses, smiling at viewer) surrounded by green optimization diagrams (with lines, arrows and labels) from her famous 1971 paper.

59 years ago today, the first computer program written in #BASIC was run.

The easy-to-learn and -use #programming language revolutionized #computing. A decade later, #BillGates would co-found #Microsoft to develop and sell the BASIC interpreter for the #Altair 8800, the first commercially successful desktop microcomputer.

Looking for people who know something about early computing, especially in the Netherlands. Please boost and help me solve the mystery of this custom made plate that used to belong to my grandfather Bram Jan Loopstra, one of the pioneers of Dutch computing. What do the pictures mean? #computing #history (EDIT: Wow, thanks for the overwhelming response! You may have to check the post on my instance to see all the MANY helpful reactions.)
A plate with five mysterious pictures. On the rim, these the date 8-3-1956 in binary, and the text Wonder en is gheen wonder.

Did anyone else happen to score back around 2000/2001 with a $99 Netpliance i-Opener "internet appliance" PC? It cost the company $300-$400 to produce, with their profit to be made from the monthly dial-up service. But...their original TOS for the purchase was not binding to that service.

It was an interesting opportunity that turned out to be a good bit of fun. ;-> It could be nicely expanded, I came to find.

Hi there! This is ACM, the world's largest computing society. As you might have noticed, we have opened not only our official #Mastodon account but also our own #instance!

Please consider joining @mastodon.acm.org, a community for #computing researchers & practitioners to connect & exchange ideas with each other, whether you are an ACM member or not.

You can use this link to join: https://mastodon.acm.org/invite/FbXaxAHg

Spread the word with your friends and colleagues! Happy tooting!

#Python for Scientific #Computing next week has just passed 300 registrations! And we have unlimited capacity since the #course is a #livestream, so you and your friends can join too.

It's a intermediate-level and practical. Drop in as you want and experience the #CodeRefinery #teaching style, it's better than you expect.

Next week Tue-Fri, European mornings, register for emails about it or follow @coderefinery or me here:

Working on #Python for #Scientific #Computing lesson material (#PythonForSciComp) with #sphinxdoc, and I'm again impressed by this hidden feature of #Sphinx.

#Intersphinx lets you connect to other doc sites and point to the primary #documentation by name, e.g. this links directly to the #numpy documentation!:

😛y:meth:`numpy.ndarray.astype`

[insert "link all the things" meme]

Norton Commander, DOS Navigator, and Volkov Commander. Three legendary orthodox file managers for DOS.
What orthodox file managers do you use, and on which platforms?
I personally can barely function without one.

I wrote an article about the need for low-carbon and #sustainable #computing and the path towards zero-carbon computing.

In short, we need to dramatically limit the growth in emissions from computing, or by 2040 emissions from computing alone will be close to half the emissions level acceptable to keep global warming below 2°C.

And it is possible to do this.
