1960 Film Poll - Semi-Final Round - Group 1

"Psycho" had no problem taking first - advancing to the 1960 Film Poll Final Round.
I chose "Inherit the Wind," which tied for second, to also advance.

Double Indemnity (1944)

There's something very kinky about that foot thing going on mid-frame, sex-positivity and all that, but he's smoking while doing it which is just wrong.

Walk a Tightrope (1964)

Graphically, one of my favourites: the lines, the colours, the composition, the contrast. Top marks all round.

A man holding a gun, behind a woman with an intense expression. The whole image is covered in vertical lines as if rain is falling. Text: "The thin line between disaster and adventure".

The Killer Is Loose (1956)

The guy in the brown coat doesn't know he's allowed to put his belongings down before he puts his hands up. Unless the robber is a sunglasses aficionado and has said "Those are nice, can I have a look? Where did you get them?".

Deadline – U.S.A. (1952)–_U.S.A.

The German is literally "the mask down" so something like "behind the mask" or "when the mask slips" kind of deal? Not even Bogart's mum would recognise him in this … liberal interpretation.

The Unsuspected (1947)

Calling your movie "The Unsuspected" is like calling it "there is a twist", right? It's the person you don't suspect!

I don't love the design but that typography is pretty out there for 1947. It looks like something from a golden-age Marvel comic.

A sleepy buff guy touching a ticket, which has just popped out of a dispenser on the wall, that reads 2AM, 18 March, 2263.
A woman looks through the passenger glass in a taxi, her bright orange hair very visible. She's pointing upwards, looking concerned. She says, "Biiig bada-boom."

Scandal Sheet (1952)

A scandal sheet is a tabloid, right—has 'the man from the mob' started a newspaper? Also what are 'Love Nesters'? Maybe I am one, how would I know?

Central image: a man in coat and hat holding a gun. Other images, a woman lying on her back on a bed; a man and a woman with happy expressions kissing; black and white images of a man and woman, the woman clutching the man's hair, captioned "Love nesters!", three men talking to a police officers captioned "Sensation Seekers!"; a person on their back with their pulse being taken captioned "Shock Slayers!". Text: "The man from 'The Mob' is making another killing!"

Flights of stairs seem to be a big thing in this batch of images. Stairs and doorways. Why did they have to abbreviate "Saturday Evening Post"? There's plenty of room.

3 things about Woody Allen’s INTERIORS

[1978]1. Every design recommendation she makes is more expensive than the agreed upon budget.
2. The back of his head, wintry Manhattan and the tops of skyscrapers. “I will say … it was like an ice palace.”
3. Endless beach fence.

EVIL DEAD 2 is one of my favorite movies. It’s the perfect balance of weird, violent, and funny. The severed hand still gets me to this day. Bruce Campbell was a physical genius in this movie. In their effort to reboot their original film, they made a cult classic.

Children reading Captain America #1 in Captain America: The First Avenger (2011)
