Happy Equinox!

(Description: Every September equinox, when the rainy season started, the Inca celebrated Coya Raymi (meaning festival of the empress). This festival honoured the empress (the coya) and also Killa, the moon goddess. The mummies of previous emperors and empresses were paraded through the streets and given offerings.)

#OnThisDay in 1573, INÉS MUŇOZ founded a convent.

When Francisco Pizarro separated from his common-law wife, Quispe Sisa, he gave their 2 kids to his sister-in-law, Inés Muñoz, to raise. Quispe Sisa's son died young & the girl was exiled to Spain aged 18.

In 1573, after Inés had been widowed a 2nd time, her only son fell seriously ill.

A Spanish chronicler claims that her son dreamt that he saw his mother & other women dressed as nuns...

I have a chapter in Jungle-tastic Tales about how pre-Columbian societies in the Amazon were more complex and larger than previously thought.

Here's a new article about it:

"The vast network of interconnected settlements shows that the Amazon was much more populated during the pre-Columbian era than previously suspected".

#WinterHeat

It’s the middle of #winter in #SouthAmerica.

In #BuenosAires, where the average high on Aug. 1 is 14°C, it surpassed 30°C on Tuesday. Temperatures Tuesday rose past 35°C in numerous locations, including at elevations of above 1000 m bis 1400m in the #Andes foothills. In some cases, the temperature crested above 38°C after leaping from morning lows in the single-digits Celsius.

16th July is #FiestaDeLaTirana, celebrated in #Chile every year. It's a popular Catholic pilgrimage where people flock to #Tarapacá province every year.

Whilst the festival doesn’t focus much on Ňusta Willac, it all began with her story...

Hello @Friendica Support
I'm writing to you from #Colombia, #SouthAmerica. My account is hosted on a server in #Argentina. I'd like to know how, either from #Fedilab on #Android or from a browser on #Windows10, I could follow several tags simultaneously, without having to add them one by one.
I'd also like to know how to use #Friendica as my "main network", so that when I post on #Friendica, the post is also done automatically on #Mastodon and #Diaspora*.
Thank you very much.

Just translated the chorus to my kids' fave song by #RenataFlores: Qam Hina from the album Isqun.

It started an interesting convo as my sons had no idea some kids have to work instead of going to school and playing.

"The Izecksohn’s Brazilian treefrog might be the world’s first known pollinating amphibian. On an expedition near Armação dos Búzios, researchers observed the species eating nectar from the milk fruit tree — a messy endeavour that causes pollen to stick to the moist skin on the frog’s back, where it might be transferred to another flower."

WHO LIKE POTATOES?
Yesterday was #NationalPotatoDay in Peru. 🥔🥔

The Incas had around 1000 potato varieties. Their potato goddess was Acsumama or Axomama. Potatoes come from #SouthAmerica originally- they were first domesticated near #LakeTiticaca more than 2000 years BC! 🔵

On this day in 1541, Juan Pizarro Yupanqui
was baptised. He was Cuxirimay's son with
the Spanish conquistador Francisco Pizarro.
Juan died young, but his mother, Cuxirimay,
lived an incredible life in Cusco.
When the Spanish came, she was betrothed to
the Inca emperor Atahualpa, then raped by an
indigenous turncoat, then in a relationship
with the top conquistador, then lastly married
to the author of an important chronicle. To

Today is the 27th anniversary of my wife and mine's first date. #OnThisDay in 2016, to commemorate the 20th anniversary, we were about to start a #cruise around #SouthAmerica and were starting with a day exploring fabulous #BuenosAires. We saw a tango show, walked the streets closed off to traffic because there was a protest against the government, visited the cathedral, ate the best steak ever, and wandered around colourful #LaBoca.

#Travel #Photography #TravelPhotography #Argentina #OTD
A colourful building on a street, on an overcast day that we can still tell is warm because of what the people in the street are wearing. We're looking from one side of the street, across the road that's devoid of traffic, to the other side where a two-storey shop is located. The building has been painted in horizontal stripes; blue, cream, blue in thick bands at the top; a red base, then a vibrant blue with bright yellow, thin bands on the bottom. There are shutters over the windows but the doorway - a huge, double-width, tall, similar to a barn entrance - is open, and there are people passing by and visible inside. Above the doorway is a shallow balcony and on it are three nearly life-size figures in a simplistic, colourful style. A man and woman, well-dressed, are on the right and in the centre respectively, while the left figure is a footballer in the Argentinian kit. There are a handful of people visible on the street, with most being tourists, but three sat on flimsy chairs under a parasol against a colourful wall to the right of the shop appear to be locals.
