With #RaspberryPi's prices still ridiculously high, the company still struggling with supply issues for the past 3 years, low and slow efforts in innovation (the RPI4 was released almost 4 years ago), and too many badly communicated bad decisions taken over the past years (including hiring a policeman who was into stealth surveillance before, and responding to concerned users with "wanna be blocked?"), it sounds like I won't be purchasing a RPi anymore once I run out of the stash in my drawer, and I will also stop writing technical articles that mainly target the RPi.

A #BananaPi has already replaced it as my home router and, with an uptime of two consecutive years in a row so far, I haven't looked back.

And, with a much more powerful CPU, more RAM, more room for customization, a REALLY open-source GPU and a much lower price tag, the #OrangePi will probably be my favourite go-to SoC from now on.

The only downside seems to be the support for Arch or Arch-based distros, but I'm sure it's nothing that can't be done with a bit of tinkering.

My #raspberrypi server has been down for like a week or two.

I have been missing a lot of my news and also added a few contacts from my phone and now they are finally synced again on my pc lol

Ross Porter created this simple-to-operate #music player for people living with with memory loss, dementia, or Alzheimer’s, who may find it hard to operate more modern stereo systems.

It's magical how music still gets through when our memory starts failing.

Gotta say that I'm EXTREMELY impressed with the performance of #FreeBSD on the #RaspberryPi. Changed my SD card on my Pi4 (usually running Debian) and after some time getting everything to my taste I'm like WOW!

Everything running so smoothly and the performance is AMAZING. Even things like fullscreen videos run great on it!

Some downsides are that wifi or sound don't work OOTB but this time it's OK: I have cables and dongles that make up for it, and it works amazingly well!

I have also printed a Raspberry PI case, the design is by Malolo, it is screw-less and has a lot of designs for both the upper and lower half.

And it fits just nicely!

OctoPrint has a new comfy home.

My only problem is that I was trying speed ups and it shows on the lower part, reduced for the upper one.

(I don't think I'll ever buy a case again, this model and its variations are just perfect.)

A photo of the Raspberry Pi case I 3D printed and mentioned in the post. It is housing a Raspberry PI 3 B+. The top half is visible, it is a slim one, it only extends to be flush with the top of the USB ports, the Ethernet port is visible as well. It is featuring a raspberry and a hole for the pins to connect HATs or devices using the GPIO pins. It is the same Raspberry Pi case as on the previous pictures but this time the bottom half is visible, in turkish blue color. It is featuring a grid of hexagon shaped holes.
The same as the previous picture, except now the Micro USB, HDMI and analog audio connectors are visible. Same Raspberry Pi case as before, this time the to part is visible again, only the angle of the photo is different.

My BIG Trend post on Vertical Farming is ... delayed ... because my 29-year-old son has a massively sophisticated vertical farm in his home ... and I want to work it into the post ... and need him to explain some of the photos to me.

To give you a sense of what he has been up to -- these are two screenshots of his #homeassistant #raspberrypi setup!

Crazy wild stuff! He configured and built much of this himself - including the hardware.

"For a variety of reasons, we leave 2022 with much better visibility of our future silicon supply chain than we entered with. As a result, we can say with confidence that, after a lean first quarter, we expect supply to recover to pre-pandemic levels in the second quarter of 2023, and to be unlimited in the second half of the year."

Last night I setup a #Gemini server on my #raspberrypi -- and I am so in love with it!

I love this simple outline style, and the vaguely markdown way of structuring everything. Just words and links and the bare essentials.

Check it out here:
gemini://paraweird.org

(You need a Gemini client. I am using Elaho on my iPhone and Lagrange on my Mac).

But you can also see it here through a web service proxy: https://portal.mozz.us/gemini/paraweird.org

Do you have a gemini capsule yourself? Would love to see!

Dear Me Of Three Years Ago. Thank you for writing long detailed blog posts about building up a #magicmirror setup. All the 'what was the command i used to do X?' is the post, and reubilding the machine after the SD card failed has been MUCH EASIER because you WROTE STUFF DOWN (in a place that's easy to find).

Documentation, yo. Do it.

Lamentable.

We hired a policeman & it's going really great. Meet our #Maker in Residence @TobyRobertsPi.

"I was a #Surveillance Officer for 15 years, so I built stuff to hide covert video & audio gear. I’d disguise it as something else, like a piece of street furniture or a household item.

During all those years of working with Raspberry Pi, I never thought I’d end up working here; as I’ve always been a #RaspberryPi fan, I’m fascinated to see what takes place behind the scenes."

In case you're wondering why #RaspberryPi is making the rounds:

The makers of the computer that can be made into a near-infinite# of unassuming devices, has hired a man whose expertise is hiding #Surveillance gear inside unassuming devices.

That in itself is understandable (he's a maker), but so is user concern.

Instead of addressing that concern, RasPi started blocking & mocking anybody who questioned the new hire.

...

IOW: RasPi is now Mastodon's first-ever real "Person of the Week"

"@Raspberry_Pi @TobyRobertsPi on Monday my friend and I discussed using a Raspberry Pi in a video game project, so I'm incredibly glad that you've posted this and your insulting replies to others' concerns so soon after before we spent any time or energy going that route.

The trauma caused by the police and their actions is very real. As someone whose parent was a police officer and suffered through many years of physical and psychological abuse due to police tactics being used on me in place of actual parenting, you should be incredibly ashamed of every response you've made in this thread."

Content warning: fediblock and raspberry pi (we knew thee well)

So @Raspberry_Pi is making a joke about a policeman joining their staff? Yes and no. This man worked as a "Technical Surveillance Officer for 15 years" for the police!

And don't come with your white cishet innocence saying that you never had problems with the police! Marginalized people all over the world experience backlash from the police! Plus on a personal note; as an anarchist I condemn every form of state monopoly on violence. :acab:

How can a brand we all like, incl. marginalized people, blow themself up like this! With hiring this person and this incompetent social media manager!

See here the alternatives: https://www.ubuntupit.com/best-raspberry-pi-alternatives/
