Have you wondered what the "Local" and "Federated" links do on Mastodon?

Local shows the latest posts from just your home instance (the site you signed up to Mastodon on). The posts are displayed in chronological order.

Federated shows the latest posts from all instances (but only from accounts followed by at least one person on your instance).

Smaller instances tend to have more interesting Local feeds, because they are quieter and much easier to follow.

HomeTown is a fork of Mastodon which lets you make instance-only posts, adjust character limits and read long form rich text blog posts.

It's still part of the Fediverse, and HomeTown users can interact with Mastodon users totally fine.

Tech people can get self-hosting instructions here:

https://github.com/hometown-fork/hometown

Non-tech people can use a managed hosting service to start their own HomeTown instance:

The "CW" icon on Mastodon stands for "Content Warning". The contents of the post is hidden, and you have to click on the warning to see the contents.

It was originally introduced so people could hide potentially upsetting topics, but it can be used for any purpose.

Many people hide political posts with a "Pol" content warning, while others use CWs to hide spoilers on posts about films.

Some use CWs to tell a joke in the warning, with the punchline revealed in the contents.

It's really irritating if you accidentally delete, unfollow or unboost something on Mastodon.

However, you can stop this happening by going to:

Preferences > Appearance > Confirmation Dialogs, tick the boxes for actions that should require confirmation, then click "Save Changes"

Every time you do these things, a confirmation dialogue box will appear asking if you're sure.
