We had a little visitor come in the house the other day. A lovely Katydid!

Water Striders are insects adapted to walk on the surface of still water through a combination of surface tension of the water and water-repelling hairs on the legs and body.
Here we see the shadows of the dimples created in the surface of the pool by each leg from the weight of the water strider -- the dimples are much larger than the body of the water strider.

A few recent photos taken around the cabin and trail.

- Camonotus castaneus, chestnut carpenter ant
- Arilus cristatus, Wheel Bug Nymph. This one was tiny and moving quickly hard to capture up close.
- Ramaria caulifloriformis, coral fungi

Also, re-sharing an earlier post of slow motion audio recording of birds, a few frogs, crickets and other natural woodland sounds. Otherworldly, relaxing, eerie. Best with headphones!

Lucky enough to see a pair of native Tasmanian millipedes feasting on this beautiful fungi.

I don't know the species of millipede, but they're definitely from the Amastigogonus family. Likewise, I don't know the fungi as I'm not a mushy specialist, but I'd guess some sort of bolete?

This was on a walk at Hollybank Forest near Launceston, Tasmania.

I love visiting the gardens at the North Carolina Museum of Art when the flowers are in bloom to catch all the different beautiful butterflies that visit the area.

A Giant Dark Horsefly - Tabanus sudeticus, the largest fly in Europe
This was sat on a car in the rain, fortunately this one is a male, only the females bite and only when they need the extra protein to create eggs, the rest of the year like the male pictured the female feeds mainly on nectar.

17-Jahres-Zikade

(Gattung Magicicada)

Indiana, USA – 26. Mai 2021

"Brood X").
