Poly Styrene, born Marianne Elliot-Said to an English mother and a Somali father in Bromley in 1957 and raised in Brixton. Singer Josephine Baker was the toast of Paris. She was a spy for the French Resistance during WWII & secured passports for Jewish citizens fleeing Nazi territory.

Her marriage to a Jewish businessman drew the attn. of Hermann Göring, who poisoned her. Members of the Fr. Resistance rescued her; she recovered.

She was awarded the Legion of Honor, Croix de Guerre & the Rosette of the Resistance. In 2021, she was inducted into Panthéon, France's hallowed tomb of heroes. #BlackFriday

I didn't know about #BlackFriday, but I'd like to share a song by Colombian musician Joe Arroyo, Rebelión (also known as No le Pegue a la Negra), that speaks of a slave rebellion in the XVII Century. The song describes a couple being punished by the white slave master, when the man sees his wife being beaten, he shouts "no le pegue a la negra" (don't beat the black woman) which is the chorus of the song.
