#GreatAlbums1990s – #PearlJam – #Ten (1991). I hesitated to include this, because it inspired more shitty knockoffs than anything since Appetite for Destruction – although that isn’t PJ’s fault – and it’s always sounded like it was recorded from the far end of an aircraft hangar. Still, there’s a half dozen great songs here – “Even Flow,” “Alive” and the scintillating “Black,” etc. For years it was the yarl heard around the world, but #Vitalogy will always be my Pearl Jam jam. #1990s, #RockMusic

Blur’s ability to turn a hook is already sharp, and Graham Coxon’s guitar sets down patterns even (ah-hem!) Oasis would adopt on their own blurry debut (not that they’d admit it).

Lee Mavers earned the prize for the 90s’ most lamented reclusive weirdo thanks to this fine (and only) album of glistening and witty pop-rock gems – all but one less than 3 minutes long. “There She Goes” is of course prime ear candy, but “Son of a Gun,” “Feelin’,” “Way Out” and other songs are just as potent. As foundational as The Smiths and Stone Roses on 90s rock – and a bit more fun.

For a band tagged as “pop,” there’s considerable adrenaline here – not to mention enough weirdness to suggest Blur was always too arty and esoteric to wear the Britpop crown of thorns stuck on their stylish moptops soon after this, their best album.
