The figure is the cost of buying carbon credits to make up for failing to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in line with EU regulations, and making other compensatory payments for failing to meet EU renewable energy targets

From John Pearce (@johnpearce650), we get this inspiring and highly informative article on the need for — and the beauty of — a smaller, sustainable, de-growth economy.

"Small Is Still Beautiful"

Conventional economic growth has lifted billions out of poverty, but in the process caused grievous damage to the biosphere on which we all depend, asset-stripping the soil, forests, and oceans.

The obsession with ever-greater conventional growth is eating the foundations of our only home.

The challenge now is to see if we can find an economic system that can support both humanity and the needs of our living planet.

Doughnut economics is based on the concept that humanity can only thrive in a circular-shaped band, with the social foundations of that health in the middle, and the environmental threats and limits as a ceiling to that health outside.
(That's the best I can do as a description; there's too much text to quote it all.)

Climate: Italy will have to cut 43.7% emissions by 2030

With the FitFor55 climate package, the EU has proposed an increase in the overall reduction effort from 30 to 40%. The objective has not been modified either by the EU Council or by the Eurochamber. For Italy, the reduction constraint thus increases from 33% to 43.7%

Hey, if you live in Canada 🇨🇦 or the USA 🇺🇸 it's time to celebrate! We've already reached Overshoot Day, earlier than ever this year!!

This means that if everyone in the world lived the way we do, consuming precious resources with insane glee, today would mark the day when we've used up *everything* the Earth has to give. All of humanity would simply have to shut down for the rest of the year. We'd be done.

Luckily for us, the rest of the world does NOT live like gluttonous United Statesians and Canadians. So, we get to keep on consuming at a mad pace for another nine months, while those pitiful poor people beneath us will have to pick up our crumbs just to survive.

No more LNG — B.C.’s big climate problem

Even as the climate crisis intensifies, big oil and gas companies, like Shell, are pushing the B.C. government to expand the liquefied natural gas industry. Doing so would mean thousands of kilometres of new pipelines, thousands of new fracking wells and megatonnes of new greenhouse gas emissions. It would also mean B.C. could not meet its climate targets
